Poster Analysis

FilmBlade Runner

Genre - Based on the poster I think the film is a part of the genre 'science fiction' as well as 'action' with some aspects of 'film noir'. The images on the poster of spacecraft and modernised weaponry and buildings portrays an aspect of science fiction. As well as the images used on the poster, the lighting and background used is a representation of the science fiction genre because... Elements of the genre 'action' can be recognised through the weaponry used in the poster such as the male character holding a gun. The genre of film noir is slightly brought in and shown through the poster through the use of the female character holding a cigarette which creates a sense of mystery. We can also tell that this film is of the genre science fiction due to the font used for the title of the film. The text is shown to be quite modernised and futuristic which is a feature that science fiction films use to represent their genre.
Narrative - Through the use of the tagline on the top right corner of the poster: "Man has made his match... now it's his problem" , we as an audience can predict that the film may be about someone creating a form beyond humanity and losing control of their creation. From the image of the space craft we can connote that the film may have something to do with 'aliens' or a different planet/universe. On the poster the two characters that are put on the front are a male and female which could indicate that these two will be the main characters of the narrative.
Audience - I think that the target group of this film is an older audience which can be inferred through the fact that this poster includes weaponry on the front cover -this indicates that there will be violent themes shown in this film therefore aiming it at an older audience. Also, the fact that the female character is holding a cigarette suggests that this film isn't for children. As interpreted from the poster, the main characters are a main and female which may suggest that with in the film they may form some sort of partnership or relationship which could mean the film contains some mature themes.

Film: Scary Movie 2

Genre - From the poster I think that this film is a range of different genres, the main being parody, horror and comedy. The review on the top of the poster, "Absolutely hilarious" gives the audience the confirmation that this film can be categorised as a comedy. Another way the audience can identify that this film has elements of comedy in it is from the tagline "More merciless. More shameless." which suggests that the film will be funnier than the first 'Scary movie' film. As well as this we can recognise as an audience that this film has aspects of comedy in it through the way the characters are shown and represented on the poster. For example, the characters are shown with comedic expressions on their faces and are presented in a not serious way which suggests elements of parody and comedy. From the title of the movie we can already tell that the film will include elements of horror however the audience can recognise that this film is a parody through the spoof characters shown on the front of the poster used from other well known horror films.

Narrative - From the different spoof characters from other horror films we can see that the narrative will be will be full of different stories within it. The producers of this film intended to use well known distinctive characters so that the narrative will be relatively easy to follow. Through the use of characters and props, on the poster there are references to the horror films 'the sixth sense', 'Hannibal' and 'The exorcist' which suggests that the film narrative will include aspects from each of these movies.
Audience - Based on the fact that this film is categorised under the genre of horror, parody and comedy, I think that it is targeted at an older audience as these genre of films are typically aimed at a more mature audience. Also as an audience we recognise the characters used in this spoof and therefore can identify what films they're from and the age range targeted. However due to the fact that this film is a parody, I think that the main target audience is teenagers and young adults typically from the age range of 16-25.

Film: Uzak

Genre - From the poster I think that this film is under the genre's action and drama based on the mood that is created through the dark, gloomy imagery on the poster. Also the fact that we can only see the behind of who is supposedly the main character may represent the genre mystery. As well as this the lighting on the poster is quite dark and consists of colours such as black and purple which gives off a feeling of mystery. We know that this film will be catergorised under a more serious genre such as drama or thriller from the presentation of the character shown on the poster being dressed in all black clothing which suggests an element of formality and darkness.

Narrative - Based on the title and name of the film, 'Uzak', as an audience we can infer that this may be a foreign film based in a foreign country. The lighting used in the poster gives a feeling that this film may be quite mysterious or thrilling with quite a dark narrative attached to it. From the use of one character on the front of the poster we as an audience may interpret that he may be the main character -therefore being the character whose life we mainly follow throughout the film. From the shot of the character on the poster and how he is placed, along with his body language (his hands in his pocket looking into distance) I think that the narrative may include the idea of the character shown on the poster having lost something/someone. It can also be interpreted that as he is looking into the distance he may be about to encounter a long journey of some sort and lighting used on the poster may suggest that this journey may not be easy and instead dark and troublesome. The use of dark lighting, a dark colour scheme and dark character clothing connotes to suffering, death, formality and mystery which may suggest relevant themes from within the film.
Audience - The visual effect of this poster giving off the feeling of darkness and mystery suggests to the audience that this film is aimed at young adults and more of an older audience instead of a younger audience.

Film: I'm not scared

Genre - From the tagline under the title, 'The award winning thriller...', we immediately learn that this film is under the genre of thriller. However, this is reasonably hard to interpret from the visuals on the poster as the setting is shown to be quite bright where the sky is blue and clear which connotes to hope and a somewhat happy ending. The shot used on the front of the poster is taken from inside a hole with a character looking down into it. The picture is taken from a low angle shot to make the character look dominant and as if he is over powering and heroic which suggests that this film genre is thriller because of the questions as an audience we begin to ask from the poster and the ideas we begin to form. As an audience we begin to question the character's connection to the hole as well as why the film is titled 'I'm not scared' and if this title has anything to do with the character and the hole on the poster. The fact that the name of the film is 'I'm not scared' suggests that this film may be under the genre's thriller, horror and mystery because as an audience we can interpret that from the name of this film it will be based around the character's fears which may mean that elements from all of these genres may be used in this film.

Narrative - The fact that this poster only includes a hole and one character on the front using a low angle shot with nothing else in the frame suggests that the film may be based around the hole and what's inside the hole. From the low angle shot we are not exposed to what is inside the hole and instead are looking out of it onto a male character who is looking into it with a face full of mixed expressions -worry, confusion, fear and bravery all at the same time. This may suggest that this character is the main character as there is no other characters shown in the shot and that he is closely orientated around this hole. The name of this film is 'I'm not scared' so as an audience we begin to question, based on what we are shown on the poster, if this character is scared of this hole or possibly something that he has found or seen in this hole. Even though we are only shown this one male character on the front of the poster, we know that he is possibly not the only main focused character in the narrative because in the title on the poster the letters have other characters on them which suggests that they may play an important role in the narrative as they are still presented in some way on the poster. Overall the main focus on this poster is the hole because all attention is brought to it from the angle shot used to the main character looking into it which draws all attention to it suggesting that it is a main key element to the narration of this film.
Audience - The fact that the main character looks like a young child may suggest that this film is aimed at a younger audience such as children and teenagers however the fact that we are told through the tagline that the film is a thriller shows that it may be aimed at an older audience such as young adults and adults. Also on the front of the poster we are given the certificate age rating of the film which is shown to be '15' which means it is aimed at teenagers and older.

Film: Sin city

Genre - On the front of this poster the first thing our eyes are drawn to is the characters who are holding guns and weaponry which already begins to suggest that this film is included under the crime genre. Weapons including guns connote to violence, death and protection which suggests to the audience that this films fits under the genres of crime, action and drama. The weather used to set this poster is rain which suggests that this film will be dark, fast paced and action packed- putting it under the genre action and thriller. The poster consists of mainly dark lighting however uses a black and white colour scheme which may be a possible representation of the idea of good vs evil within the film. The theme of good vs evil is often linked to the film genre thriller. Interestingly, the film title across the top of the poster is written in big bold red letters which stands out, drawing the audience to focus on that section. The typography of the title is an important element to this poster as the bold lettering is used so a clear understanding of where the film will be set can be made from it and the red signifies death and danger which gives the audience an indication as to what will occur in this film as well as the genre this film may be.

Narrative - The poster has portrayed this film as quite dark and sinister based on the imagery used of weaponry, rain and what seems to be rival enemies; the darkness emphasises that this movie will include action and violence. The poster includes a central image of a group of men and women with guns and weapons which suggests that the narration will be mainly focused around this group of people. The man at the front of the group is the main focus of the image and is portrayed as the male protagonist of the group which suggests that he is a leader and a main character who the narration may be focused around. His dominance is emphasised through the low angle shot used to make his character look more dominating, intimidating. At the bottom of the poster there is a smaller image of what looks like a man walking through an unoccupied street which may suggest that he plays the role of a solitary character. The fact that he is presented as alone suggests that he may be a possibly enemy or against the group of characters introduced through the central image. This idea that the character in the smaller image is an enemy of the group is further reinforced through the fact that the protagonist in the central image seems to be looking down at this character and pointing the gun at him, suggesting that there is a strong link between the characters. In this narration I think that male dominance will be a key feature because throughout this poster the only characters with guns are male, the female characters are instead holding less powerful weapons. This also suggests that the male characters will carry more importance throughout this film compared to the female characters as they have the respect to carry a more harmful and powerful weapon. The title of the film is 'sin city' which suggests that the narration of this film will be based around many characters carrying out sinful activities.
Audience - The fact that the title of this film is 'sin city' proposes that this film will be full of sinful acts which may include a large amount of violence as well as mature themes. This indicates that this film is aimed at an older audience based around the age 18 and above. The woman on the far left of the central image is dressed quite seductively as well as the other woman on the far right who is baring skin suggests that this film contains mature themes and ideas so therefore it is aimed at a more mature, older audience.

Film: Pirates of the Caribbean

Genre - This film poster contains a lot of mystical imagery on it such as the painting of the ship in the sea surrounded by a what we assume is a sea monster based on the tentacle sticking out of the water which suggests that this film is based around the genres fantasy and adventure. The typography of the title of the film is interesting as it uses a font that would be used for fantasy and adventure which gives a clear indication of the type of genre this film is. From my culture capital knowledge I know that the character of Jack sparrow on the poster is played by Johnny Depp, who is known to be quite comical in his role of acting which therefore signifies that this film may also be categorised under the genre comedy.

Narrative - The image at the top of the poster shows three characters who we assume are the main characters in the film due to the fact that they are the only people presented on the poster and that there may be a connection between them. We don't assume that they are as a group together as they are all positioned differently instead of aligned in the image. The male character to the far left is positioned slightly more in front of the other male and female character which suggests to the audience that he is the protagonist who the narration will mainly follow. Also, the fact that he is placed on the far left of the image means that he is the first character the audience will notice and be drawn to, signifying his role in the movie. We can also tell he is an important character because the film title is 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and he is the only character portrayed as a pirate and is wearing the same bandanna as the skull in the film title. An audience may assume that there is a relationship between the female character and one of the male characters or even both of them. Elaborating on this idea, as an audience we may also assume that these two male characters may be in competition with each other to win over the love of the female character. However this interpretation is challenged by the fact that the female character is shown to be placed on the far right of the image, standing independent. If she was in the centre of the image in the middle of these two male figures then it would be easier to make this narrative assumption. The female character is shown to be wearing a white frock with her hair down which portrays her as being lady like, feminine and elegant. In this image of her we are only exposed to half of her body which may suggest that she carries another persona which may be more masculine and bold. In the painting of the ships in the sea, we are given a glimpse of a possible scene from the movie- this suggests to the audience that this film will be set on a ship, in the middle of the sea.
Audience - The main target audience of The Pirates of the Caribbean is a younger viewer. The poster also suggests that it is generally appropriate for all ages due to the sense of adventure conveyed through the imagery on the poster.

Film: Bride and Prejudice

Genre - The central image in the middle of the poster shows a male and female standing with their backs together who look as if they may be in a relationship which shows that this film is a romance. The bright colours used in the poster a long with the clear blue sky used to set the poster suggest that this film will be a happy, comedic film. The facial expressions of the characters on the poster suggest that this film will be a comedy as they are all smiling or laughing. The use of characters dancing and the music note used as the '&' in the film title on the poster shows that this film is a musical. This film could also be categorised into the sub-genre romantic comedy.

Narrative - The central image on the poster is of a white male and an Asian female standing back to back. This shows that there is a connection between the two and the film will follow them as they are shown to be the main characters. From the film title 'Pride and prejudice' and the central image used the audience can make the assumption that this film may be about conflict risen through the relationship of the main characters. This suggests that the film will focus on the themes of conflict from society, realism, family and romanticism. On the left of the male character in the central image there are young female and male characters dressed in more modern clothes, along with church singers and modernised buildings in the background which looks a part of a city. On the right of the female character in the central image there are older characters dressed in more traditional clothing, singing and dancing in front of a religious temple. The left side of the poster contrasts to the right side of the poster as different values and norms are shown on each side, this is a representation that this film will include the clashing of beliefs and lifestyles. The central image of the male and female brings these two different lifestyles shown on the left and right together which suggests that the different lifestyles of these characters will eventually be unified. The use of church singers and characters in traditional clothing chucking confetti in front of a temple suggests that they are celebrating what looks to be a wedding- this shows that by the end of the film the two main characters who we presume are in a relationship will overcome all dispute and end up married. The clear sky, confetti and use of bright warm colours suggests that this film will have an overall happy storyline with a happy ending.
Audience - As this film is a romantic comedy it is mainly targeted at an older audience, typically females as this type of genre is usually aimed at a female audience. The fact that this film mainly focuses on Indian culture may suggest that it is aimed more at an Asian audience as it may be more relatable to this group of people making it more appealing to them.

Film: Million dollar baby

Genre - The actors in the poster are shown to have serious facial expressions which suggests that this film will be categorised under the genre drama. The consistent use of black, white and low key lighting creates a sense of mystery, adding to the drama genre. In the central image the female is wearing a sports bra which suggests that this film will also fit under the genre sport.

Narrative - On this poster there are three characters presented, two males and one female. The female character is placed in the centre in a close up shot, taking up most of the poster which signifies that she may be the protagonist and the narrative will be based around her. In the image we are only shown her back and the side of her face- the lighting used in this image focuses mainly around her back and the main features on her face. The lighting exposes the empowering expression on her face and highlights her back muscles which is significant as it goes against the stereotype that women are meant to be dainty and obedient instead of muscly and driven. Her noticeable muscular build and serious facial expression suggest to the audience that she is linked to quite an aggressive, intense sport such as boxing or martial arts showing that she is a strong, courageous character. We also recognise that she is linked to sport through her attire and the way her hair is put away from her face in two braids. The clothing and hair in the mise-en-scene are not stereotypical as they present the character as being masculine even though she is a female. The two male characters are positioned on either side of the female and only their face is shown which suggests that they are not the main character but play a main role in the film as they are still included on the poster. The female's facial expression looks as if she is determined and on a mission. The man's facial expressions to the left of the female shows him to be frowning, almost as if he is out to get someone whereas the male character to the right has more of a worried, concerned facial expression. The contrast of the presentation of these two characters shows that there may be conflict or division between them.
Audience - Due to the seriousness created through the poster, I think that this film is aimed at an older audience and young adults. This film is also targeted at people who are interested in sports. As this film does not conform to female stereotypes this may attract a wider female audience as the main character does not play a typical female role.
