Coursework: Pre-production - Mise-en-scene

MISE EN SCENE

Costume
My main character will be mainly dressed in dark black baggy clothing which will communicate hidden identity and may spark unease for an audience. One dominant reading of black baggy clothing for an audience would be that the dark colours are a reflection of how the character is feeling and a symbol of mystery and gloom. This links to my Statement of intent as this type of costume contributes to creating a negative representation of my character, showing his persona as being quite dark and damaged; suffering from a mental illness and is harassed by multiple evil entities - this is severely impacting his life .

Lighting
Scenes included in my trailer will mainly be filmed in low key lighting, some being filmed in natural light. Low key lighting is crucial in depicting the horror genre as it creates feelings of suspense, fear and even mystery for an audience. Darkness will be a continuing motif in my trailer but I will also make use of natural lighting as I think it is crucial to film scenes in the daytime to give the audience a true representation of my characters constant battle with his mental illness and with his demons, and how it effects him on a day to day basis. I am planning on filming most of the scenes of my trailer inside the house of the main character as this is a crucial setting for my narrative as the protagonist mainly spends his time inside battling with his inner demons.

Actors
My main character will be a teenage white male (27 yo) with a kind of alternative look. His best friend, the hero in the narrative, will be a bame female (17 yo) with more of a conventional appearance of a teenage girl. I will also need to use actor parents of the main character as this is a crucial part of the narrative in depicting the rift between Michael and the people around him. As I aim to film a scene in a classroom, I will need to use actors to make up a class of people in order to make the production look more accurate and authentic.

Make-up
For my main character, Michael, I will use a pale foundation to create a gaunt, sombre look - this will make him look like he is suffering and weak. Make up will be crucial for creating cuts and bruises on skin. I will also use fake blood when necessary however will not make scenes too explicit. Using make up I will create a glowy look on the hero in the trailer to make her stand out, looking bold and appearing empowering - I will create this using natural make up to brighten her face and create a put together look.

Props
I will use a repeated motif of Christian religious symbols such as the Bible, crosses, religious pendants and religious images. The religious references in the trailer will reflect the horror genre to an audience as religion is significantly used in horror films as it communicates saviour and solution. As my main character is a substance abuser I will need to use props such as alcohol, cigarettes and pills - this will help to depict his true suffering and desperate attempt to escape from all of his troubles. I am considering creating a scene of self harm to show the characters true pain and battle with the demons around him however due to watershed I will have to think of a suitable way to depict his suffering.

Setting
My main location in the trailer will be set in the home of the protagonist. This will create more of an intimate feel for audiences as it is a direct insight into the character's everyday life. In terms of the house setting, I will mainly record in the bedroom of my main character as that is where he spends most of his time isolating himself from the world. My main setting of a family home will also be a subversion of horror conventions as usually horror films tend to use a spooky or haunted set - for example an abandoned haunted house - but the use of an ordinary house places the audience in a relatable location rather than a place of mystery. I also want to create a short scene in a classroom to show the true extent of my main character's problems and how they severely effect him doing ordinary everyday things such as going to school. Filming in a church is also an idea as I want to bring in a religious element to my narrative as religion is usually a huge solution in horror films.
